Today, another fire strikes Southern California. The Getty Fire emerged early this morning in West Los Angeles and continues to spread, burning over 600 acres. Several celebrities, including Arnold Schwarzenegger and LeBron James, have had to evacuate their homes. USC sent an email to students who may be affected by these fires, containing available resources and support. Right before he was racking up wins in high school, Onyeka Okongwu suffered a tough loss, the loss of his brother. Freshman forward Onyeka Okongwu is one of USC’s top freshman. He’s provided the Trojans a defensive addition while also offering a talented offensive skill set. While the Trojans got a preview in the preseason of what Onyeka can bring to this team, USC will get to see the practice turn into production when they host Florida A&M on November 5th. Onyeka graduated from Chino Hills High School. In his senior season he averaged 27.0 points, 100.0 rebounds, 4.3 blocks and 4.0 assists. He was named “Mr. Basketball” two years in a row and was named the L.A. Times Player of the Year. His list of awards, titles and stats goes on but there’s one number that means the most to Onyeka, the number 21. Okongwu reps the number 21 in remembrance of his older brother Nnamdi, who also played basketball at Chino Hills and died after a skateboard accident in 2014. Onyeka, or “Big O”, sat down to share how the loss of his older brother has shaped his life, his game and his relationship with his family.
